Joh. 20:17 “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God”.
Heb. 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water”.
Once a year most all of Christendom celebrates a day known as Easter, which will be just about when I’m done with this post. We have Easter egg hunts for the kids and adults alike. We think of cute bunny rabbits, preferably chocolate covered ones for the chocoholics. Up until age 26, I never gave it a lot of thought, just another holiday. Maybe I wouldn’t have to work on Good Friday or the Monday after Easter Sunday which was a cool deal. I didn’t really understand or even care what that day really meant, and I’m quite certain I wasn’t alone.
I’ll be completely honest with you…I had no intention of living beyond age 35 because, by biblical definition, I was lost. I drank so much alcohol I ended up with cirrhosis of the liver, not to mention the drugs I’d done and the dope I smoked. I’m convinced that human beings are all made up of the same, we all share what the Bible calls a soul. I don’t care what movies, books, or even Psychologist say, the only soulless human is a dead one. I’m sure you’ve heard it said: “if you cut me, will I not bleed”? That statement speaks of the commonality we all share as human beings spirit, soul, and body. So I speak for myself, but I’m certain it holds true for many… when I polluted my mind, (which according to much scripture is housed by our soul), and my body with those things, it was only a symptom of something so much deeper in that fracture soul of mine. I labeled it many things, I need friends (loneliness) because the kids I thought were my friends rejected me, it makes me feel and look cool, etc. But the major part of the problem was just being a loss. One day Jesus and His disciples were strolling through a certain town and spotted this little dude by the name of Zacchaeus, who’d climbed up a tree to get a look at The LORD. You know the story:
Luk. 19:8 “And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” I think it important to understand that Jesus came “to that which was His own”, the nation of Israel based upon promises made to the father of that nation, Abraham. Also, notice “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Check out the definition of the word ‘lost’: apollumi Thayer Definition: 1d) to declare that one must be put to death 1e) metaphorically to devote or give over to eternal misery in hell Part of Speech: verb
Practically every word in all languages have more than one meaning depending on the context. Moreover, in this context Jesus meant more than a “Runaway Child”, here He speaks of the human condition based on Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Now let’s talk about the soul, specifically the soul which is lost. In The New Testament, the Greek word for soul is ‘psuchē’, it’s where we get the English word ‘psyche’ which gives birth to what we call Psychology. And that word means ‘the study of the soul,’ whether Therapist get it or not. That word has its root in The New Testament. Heb. 3:5 “And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant (therapōn), for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;” All one would need to do is read The Pentateuch and see that Jehovah anointed him as a Therapist or Counselor for an entire nation. Then under a better covenant, God The Son became our Great Physician. Mar 2:16 “And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? 17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The thing we need to accept is that everybody has a soul or ‘psuchē’, I mean let’s face it, the world is sick and Christ Jesus is its true cure. I’m no historian but I know enough about human history to know that we’ve always lied to each other, cheated one another, stolen from each other, and Cain gave us a good send-off by committing the first act of pre-meditated murder by killing his brother.
I have a book by an author called Watchman Nee, a Chinese Christian leader during the first half of the 20th century, this book is titled ‘The Spiritual Man’. As I learned more and more about the man himself, I found that many Christians shunned him and his teachings because he had no use for denominations. But we often alienate people who don’t understand or disagree with our way of thinking. This man, in my opinion, did a masterful study of the division of the human spirit, soul, and body. The Bible, especially The New Testament makes this distinction. 1Th 5:23 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”. We are tri-part being, and The God of peace wants the whole of us preserved blamelessly. Now I don’t need to be a scholar to see that our leaders are too much like the religious and political leaders of Jesus day, thinking that their own righteousness will be sufficient. While history continually screams quite loudly, WE CAN’T SAVE OURSELVES!!! We need an otherworldly Savior, someone not infected with the disease of sin.
But here is the pure unadulterated truth about me… my ‘psuchē’ or psyche was broken when I was conceived in my mother’s womb, and so was yours. So all of the partying, the alcohol and drugs were just the crazy glue I used to hide that brokenness. And you know what makes the glue crazier, I was hiding from myself. I had to cope with the hardships of having a broken soul, and also being born into a broken family. Life scared the crap out of me, and yes I said it…crap. And I truly, truly believe billions of others have felt the same. So what do we do… us humans, we anesthetize, we do drugs, get high, get drunk, hurt one another, we beat our wives and abuse the children. Then we say it’s not our fault, we were born in a sinful world’. However, it is our fault…particularly if we’ve heard The Gospel of The LORD Jesus Christ and treated it as swine would treat pearls. That’s why He came up out of the grave and defeated every argument and enemy imaginable for our sorry sin-sick souls.
It would be remiss on my part if I didn’t say this on behalf of God’s ideal for mankind, and you can get mad or get right, that’s completely up to you. God did not make a mistake when He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Use your imagination, where do you think this world would be if He would’ve allowed that place to infect the rest of the world? Look at where it is right now. If God had not destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, that lifestyle would have flourished and spread like wildfire, and guess what might have been the outcome? Procreation would have eventually come to a grinding halt. Our LORD Jesus probably would never have been born because men can’t impregnate men and they can’t beget one another, and the same holds true for women. The LORD God is a God of justice, not wrath. It was the righteous thing to do because His objective is to get Satan and his crew in the lake of fire. Therefore, Christ must be born of a virgin, impregnated by The Holy Spirit, live a sinless life, preach The Gospel to the poor, heal the sick, set at liberty the captives and raise the dead. The religious leaders had to persecute Him in order for us to see that even they can be lead astray by the devil. It was ordained that He would suffer under Pontus Pilate. He was crucified by the hands of wicked men, and be the innocent victim that would die in our place. He died and was buried in a rich man’s grave, went to Hades so that we wouldn’t have to go, and on the third day triumphantly bear Satan on his own turf at his own game. Part two tomorrow…
